History of Havoline
1940

1940's: The company’s next major development in lubricant technology occurred in 1946 with the introduction of New and Improved Havoline® Motor Oil, a specially refined motor oil with additives to inhibit oxidation, protect against corrosion, provide detergent and dispersive action, reduce piston ring wear at both low and high temperatures, and protect against engine rust.

Four years later, the company brought out Custom-Made Havoline, following more than 3 million miles of over-the-road testing from the blistering heat of Death Valley to the bitter cold of Montana. These tests were featured in company ads, such as one showing a couple riding in a luxury convertible, while the text read: “Tests prove Custom-Made Havoline is the Best Motor Oil your money can buy.” Building on this achievement, the company subsequently developed Advanced Custom-Made Havoline, which featured greater detergency to clean more efficiently as it lubricated, prevent hydraulic valve lifters from sticking, and “wear-proof” a car’s engine.
