McMurray Moves Closer to Top 10 with 13th-Place Finish at The Glen

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y., (August 15, 2004) --- Jamie McMurray and the Texaco/Havoline team used a 13th-place finish at Watkins Glen International to move one step closer to the NASCAR Top 10 and gain a birth spot in the Chase for the Championship. McMurray leaves Watkins Glen sitting 15th in points, only 99 points out of the top 10.

"I'm a little disappointed with 13th," McMurray said. "After our strong second-place run at Sonoma earlier this year, I figured we'd be a little better than that. The Texaco/Havoline Dodge was pretty loose most of the race, but we kept making adjustments and had it pretty good towards the end. It's just so hard to pass here. Track position meant everything today. We gained a few points on 10th place, but it's going to be a tight battle to get into the top 10."
After qualifying was rained out on Friday, the No. 42 Texaco/Havoline Dodge rolled off the starting grid from 14th place as the field was lined up according to current car owner points.

By lap 20, McMurray had moved into seventh place as he radioed the crew his car was "good under breaking, but loose everywhere else."

During a scheduled green-flag pit stop on lap 30, McMurray was fitted with four tires and fuel as an air pressure adjustment was made to the Texaco/Havoline Dodge.

By lap 50 McMurray was running 19th as he radioed the crew that his Dodge felt pretty good. When the caution flag waved a few laps later, McMurray once again headed for pit road for tires and fuel.

The team would make its final pit stop on lap 74 during a caution period. Four tires and fuel was the call while another air pressure adjustment was made to tighten the car up.

With 10 laps to go, McMurray was running in 18th place, but as the laps clicked off, the Joplin, Mo. native began to pick off cars. When the checkered flag fell, the Texaco/Havoline Dodge crossed the finish line in 13th place.

Next up for the Texaco/Havoline team is Michigan International Speedway for the running of the Michigan 400 this Sunday.
