Spencer McCarthy is 2008 Texaco Havoline Ginetta Champion
Spencer McCarthy secured the 2008 Texaco Havoline Ginetta Championship at the conclusion of round 19 and the first of two races at Donington Park on 11-12 October.
Fourth place was all he needed to secure the title but a brake problem in qualifying meant he would have to fight for it. Starting in 8th place, he didn’t waste any time – taking his #52 car into 4th by the end of the first lap.
Title rival Kieran Vernon took the race win, but McCarthy’s fourth place finish had him 37 points ahead with only 36 to play for in the final race the next day.
“It’s been a fantastic season,” said McCarthy on receiving his #1 number for the final race of the season. “I’ve got to hand it to the guys I’ve been racing with as well, it’s been close and it’s been clean. It’s been far from easy, but I’ve loved it.”
Ironically, in the final race Spencer suffered his only non-finish of the season after a racing incident with Gary Simms coming out of the chicane for the 9th time. The #1 was left stranded at the side of the track with minor damage.
The final race was won by Julian Barratt, ahead of Phil Sykes and Ginetta podium newcomer Matt Flowers.
